Sarah Magalhães
Sarah is a performing artist and researcher in Indology. In 2008 she settles down in India where she lived for eleven years following the traditional Paramparam teachings of Indian classical dance with the renowned Bharat Natyam exponent Dr. Sucheta Chapekar in Pune. In search of the authenticity of this sacred art, she has travelled all over India, exploring ancient temples where she performs spontaneously for those who are present, mostly simple people who would never have the opportunity to witness classical dance. Exploring the roots of this art form, she studies Indian philosophy and aesthetics. She has completed a diploma in Nritya Shastra at Nalanda Dance Research Centre in Mumbai and a master’s in philosophy at Pune University. She has performed and conducted several workshops in Brazil, India and France. She is a researcher scholar at Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune working on her thesis: “The Sacred Dance of Ancient India and its relevance to Hindu Iconography”.

In this series of talks, Sarah will take us to India where we learn with her more about the spiritual import of Hindu dance from a Traditional perspective. Inspired by the writings of Frithjof Schuon, particularly on sacred art, she will read a passage of her choice from Schuon’s books where she will illustrate the main ideas of the text with the help of the dramatic art of ancient India, bringing into evidence the relationship between form and intellection in the sacred gestures of Hindu dance.
