Gawain puts on his fine armour and ties the lady’s lace around his waist, he rides off alone in search of the Green Chapel so that he may honour his agreement with the Green Knight. He sees a low mound in a clearing and hears a strange noise like the sharpening of a blade. Gawain calls out and the Green Knight appears, carrying a huge axe.

“Oh lord”, said the gentle knight,
“Have I found the Green Chapel?!
Might I around midnight
Hear the matins of the Devil?!”
